About Dr. Karan Singh

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dr. Karan Singh is a member of India’s Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha. He was born heir apparent to the then ruler of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and served successively as regent, Sardar-i-Riyasat and governor of the state.

Currently, Dr Karan Singh is India’s representative on UNESCO’s Executive Board; he also has been a member of UNESCO’s International Commission on Education in the Twenty-first Century.

Dr Singh was the youngest Cabinet Minister when he joined the Union Government in 1967. He has held the tourism and civil aviation, health and family planning and the education and culture portfolios in the Indian government and also served briefly as Ambassador to the United States. Dr Singh has been Chancellor of Benaras Hindu University, Jammu and Kashmir University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has also served as Chairman of the Indian Board of Wildlife and is associated with several cultural and academic institutions. For the last 10 years, Dr. Karan Singh has been Chairman, Executive Council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

In 2005, Dr Karan Singh was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India. Read more

The expression ‘man for all seasons’ pales somewhat before the career of Dr. Karan Singh. To hear him say he is “open to speak on any subject under the sun” is not surprising. He has been a close observer of history even as he participated in its making.

The nation will remain grateful to him for its peaceful transition from feudalism to democracy. In view of the recent burst of interest in the media, I would like to recall the association that I was privileged to have, over six decades ago, with the great Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
