India lights up in blue to celebrate UN Day

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, India lit iconic landmarks and heritage sites across the country – blue – the official colour of the United Nations on Saturday, 24 October 2015.

India joined over 60 nations globally in lighting over 300 iconic monuments, buildings, museums, bridges and other landmarks on UN Day.

The blue wave, which started in New Zealand, reached India as the country lit several world heritage sites, including Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutab Minar in New Delhi; Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai; railway stations in Ooty, Shimla and Darjeeling, part of the Mountain Railways of India and some of India’s most visible landmarks like Sabarmati Ashram, Sun Temple in Gujarat and more.

On the UN Day, the honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also congratulated the United Nations on its 70thanniversary through Twitter.

To commemorate UN Day, India also hoisted the United Nations flag along with its national flag above government buildings in the capital and some states.
