New Delhi, 12 November 2014: The Government of India has re-affirmed its commitment to development cooperation by pledging over US$ 9 million to UN development activities in 2015. India was among the 26 countries that have pledged USD 560 million in support of UN development activities for the next year.
India’s US$ 9.28 million pledge includes contributions of US$ 4.5 million to UNDP; US$1 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), US$ 900,000 to UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), US$ 500,000 to the United Nations Population Fund; US$ 1.92 million for the World Food Programme for biennium 2015-2016 and US$ 100,000 to UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
Lise Grande, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative says, “India continues to be a leading force in development cooperation and to show outstanding leadership in support of efforts to eradicate poverty all over the world.”
India also has a standing five-year commitment of US$ 5 million with UN Women, of which, its fifth and final instalment of US$ one million was handed over by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to the Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mllambo-Ngcuka earlier last month.
