Advancing Universal Health Coverage in India: Lessons from International Experience

Google Hangout: #Equality4Women: Progress For All

Marking International Women’s Day, a panel of guests from Government of India, UNICEF, UN Women, the International Center for Research on Women, Jagori, Google, UNICEF led programme called Deepshikha, and Barclays discussed the situation of women and girls in India, what the Government and other stakeholders are doing about it, what are the schemes and programmes to promote gender equality and women/girls empowerment, the key priorities for the Government, the UN and civil society organizations in this area, as well as recommendations for the way forward.

Launch of EU film ‘Women who Inspire’ and UN Women Report ‘Hearts & Minds: Women of India Speak’, 10 March 2014. Venue: India Habitat Centre, New Delhi; 11.15 am -12.25 pm

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the European Union and UN Women are jointly organizing a one-day conference. During this event, homage would be paid to remarkable Indian women and organizations who have been inspiring positive change in critical areas of women’s empowerment.

A new European Union Film ‘Women who Inspire’ on inspiring women in India, and a report titled ‘Hearts and Minds,’ will also be launched at the event.

The report captures the voices and hopes for change of hundreds of elected women representatives in five states across India. This report is aimed at sharing the “lived experiences” of women and girls in India and ensuring that the voice are meaningfully reflected in the emerging post-2015 development discourse and agenda.

High-level Seminar on ‘The Future of the World Economy and Globalization in the aftermath of Global Financial Crisis: Implications for Developing Economies’

The South and South-West Asia Office of UNESCAP (ESCAP-SSWA) hosted a high-level seminar on ‘The Future of World Economy and Globalization in the aftermath of Global Financial Crisis: Implications for Developing Economies,’ on 14 January 2014 in New Delhi. The high-level seminar featured a keynote address by Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz, also President, Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), Columbia University.

Launch of National Adolescent Health Programme and National Adolescent Health Consultation
UNFPA partnered with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to launch the National Adolescent Health Programme on 7 Jan 2014. This was followed by a consultation on adolescent health including adolescence pregnancy, child marriage, ways of promoting a healthy lifestyle, violence and injuries in adolescence, gender equality, etc.


National Adolescent Health Programme Launch: Workshop with Young People
A workshop where adolescents discussed their health needs, learnt about reproductive, sexual and mental health, and various forms of violence was organized by UNFPA on 5-6 Jan 2014. The workshop also raised awareness among adolescents on key elements of the adolescent health strategy.


Enabling Elected Women Representatives in Uttar Pradesh to Address Gender Based Violence
09 – 10 December 2013, Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, India

The Women’s Resource and Advocacy Centre, National Alliance of Women, the National Commission for Women in collaboration with the UN Solution Exchange Gender Community and supported by the Department of International Development is organising a two day learning event with elected women representatives in Sitapur District in Uttar Pradesh.

The objective of the workshop is to for the elected women representatives to share experiences on the challenges they face and explore options for them to address violence against women effectively.

Policy Dialogue on Regional Cooperation, Connectivity and Inclusive Development in South and South-West Asia,

28-29 November, New Delhi, India

As part of the ESCAP South and South-West Asia (SSWA) Office’s continuing engagement with member States to increase regional cooperation for accelerated inclusive and sustainable development across the subregion, the Policy Dialogue on Regional Cooperation, Connectivity and Inclusive Development in SSWA includes a High-level round table of eminent experts and officials who will discuss the potential for greater regional cooperation between the 10 member States. Other policy discussions and analysis will address priority development areas for SSWA countries and ways to strengthen regional connectivity for trade and transit facilitation. Panelists will also recommend actions to boost regional cooperation in food security, energy security and disaster-risk reduction strategies. The Policy Dialogue will also discuss the recommendations of the South Asia Policy Dialogue on Women’s Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship that ESCAP-SSWA will hold on 27th November, and which will be attended by major South Asian women’s chambers of commerce and entrepreneurship, and network organizations. Two key publications will be launched in SSWA as part of the event: the ESCAP Trade and Investment Report 2013, during a panel of experts which will consider the key results of the Report and implications for trade and investment strategies in the subregion, and the MHHDC South Asia Human Development Report 2013, with key luminaries from across South Asia engaged to discuss the conclusions and opportunities for greater regional cooperation to address water-related aspects of human development in SSWA. The latter launch is the outcome of a partnership between ESCAP-SSWA and the Mahbub-ul-Haq Human Development Centre (MHHDC), Pakistan.

South Asia Policy Dialogue on Women’s Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship,

The South Asia Policy Dialogue on Women Entrepreneurship is being co-organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, South and South-West Asia Office (ESCAP-SSWA), the SAARC Chamber Women Entrepreneurs Council (SCWEC) which is part of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Ladies Organization (FLO), in partnership with the Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the South Asia Women’s Network. It will aim to identify challenges and barriers to women’s entrepreneurship common to South Asian countries, consolidate policy findings and recommendations to create a more enabling environment for female entrepreneurship.
