[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black” css=”.vc_custom_1473936646036{margin-top: -35px ;margin-bottom: 10px ;}”][vc_column_text]In 2008, the UN Secretary-General launched the UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign with the aim to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.
Through its advocacy initiatives at the global, regional and national levels, the UNiTE campaign is working to mobilize individuals and communities. In addition to supporting the longstanding efforts of women’s and civil society organizations, the campaign is actively engaging with men, young people, celebrities, artists, sports personalities, private sector and many more.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black” css=”.vc_custom_1473936646036{margin-top: -35px ;margin-bottom: 10px ;}”][vc_column_text]A signatory to the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) India has a number of progressive laws that support gender equality and ending discrimination and violence against women. The Government of India was represented at the 2013 session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), where Member States committed to ending all forms of violence against women. They recognized that there is a need to address the economic and political underpinnings of violence; ensure access to justice; strengthen multi-sectoral approaches; and end harmful traditional practices that negatively impact women. Under the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, the Government of India has pledged to establish 100 One Stop Crisis Centres and the creation of a 1000 Crore Nirbhaya Fund to respond to Violence against Women and Girls. More recently, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act of 2013 expands the scope of sexual and gender based crimes against women.
In support of the Secretary General’s campaign, the United Nations in India supports the Government of India’s efforts to end violence and discrimination against women, including by increasing political and social commitment to end discrimination.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”8679″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Joint UN Advocacy to End Violence against Women
In November 2013, the UNCT in India launched the UN Joint India Advocacy and Communications Campaign to end violence against women and girls. This year the UNCT joined forces again to initiate both awareness generating campaigns and advocacy initiatives with over 6,300 participants. The use of social media enabled the UNCT to reach 1.6 million people globally. Major newspapers in India and around the world published over 175 articles covering a number of events which took place in November and during the 16 Days of Activism.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
